The deterioration of reinforced concrete structures in marine environments, resulting from the migration of chloride ions that in turn lead to the corrosion of the steel rebar of the said structures, is a very serious problem of worldwide proportions.

The common solutions to control the steel corrosion like the use of a cathodic protection (sacrificial anode or impressed current), an increase of the concrete cover or the addition of corrosion inhibitors to the concrete mix are generally expensive from the get-go and even in maintenance for some. In some cases, these solutions present an implementation challenge and, to this day, their efficiency is still debatable.
