Many industries have to deal with the degradation of their reinforced concrete infrastructures, whether related to how long they’ve been in service or often times the result of an aggressive environment. As an example, the drinking and wastewater treatment plants are particularly subjected to this last condition.
The use of halogens such as chlorine, fluorine, or iodine, in the disinfection of drinking water, as well as the ozonation, all have a devastating effect on steel products, no matter if they are black, galvanized, epoxy covered or even stainless steel elements. Evidently, this disinfection is an absolute necessity to achieve a proper quality of the water that will be distributed to the surrounding homes and users. It is therefore also essential to take all appropriate measures to protect the equipments and reinforced concrete reservoirs against the aggressiveness of these products.

To continue in the same vein, wastewater treatment plants also have their share of problems. Their situation differs however in the source of the metallic element’s corrosion initiator or activator. In this last case, it is the result of the presence of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) produced by bacterial silt accumulations, that extends its devastating effects not only to submerged structures and elements but also to the ones surrounding the installations.
