Seawall Sentinel: V‑ROD GFRP Bars Fortify Sunshine Skyway Rest Area

The Sunshine Skyway Rest Area Seawall Replacement project along I-275 in Pinellas and Manatee counties, Florida, modernizes critical coastal infrastructure at the north and south Sunshine Skyway Bridge rest areas. Kicked off in October 2016 under an $18.1 million FDOT design-build contract, the scope includes demolition and full reconstruction of seawall caps, extension of marine-grade concrete breakwaters, and installation of new pedestrian barriers.

To ensure long-term performance in a harsh saltwater environment, engineers embedded V‑ROD Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars in the replacement seawall panels and reinforced concrete caps. This composite reinforcement delivers superior corrosion resistance to chloride-rich spray, matches concrete’s thermal expansion to minimize cracking, and eliminates rust-induced spalling and costly repair cycles. Lightweight and easy to handle on floating platforms, V‑ROD bars accelerated construction while cutting life-cycle maintenance costs by up to 60 percent. Completed in fall 2019, the project now safeguards shoreline stability and enhances visitor safety for decades to come.
